Radhika & Arpit I Indian Wedding I Carlyle On The Green I Part 4

Thursday, September 5th, 2013

Don’t know how Radhika did it, but she continued to be full of energy and look beautiful 14 hours into her wedding day at the start of our second portrait session. She took it all in stride as well when her reception dress went temporarily AWOL throwing off the schedule. Luckily, the families took my advice to pad their schedule with extra time in case of problems! We went from beach venue to golf course at Carlyle On The Green in Old Bethpage. Late afternoon summer light is such a great time for portraits and the golf course provided a beautiful setting (while paying attention to stay out of the way of flying golf balls and golfers!). I love the red foliage on the side of the first portrait. No swan ice sculpture for this couple. The airplane sculpture was in honor of Arpit’s love of flying.

Radhika & Arpit I Indian Wedding I Land’s End I Part 3

Friday, August 30th, 2013

Land’s End in Sayville is a lovely venue for a wedding. It’s always fun to photograph a new place. It was a beautiful clear blue sky day when I first saw the place in late afternoon light. I hadn’t realized the Fire Island ferries go past there all day long and it was fun to watch the boats. Indian weddings rarely take place on beaches simply because it’s not the easiest thing to accommodate 300 plus guests. It was a very hot July 4th holiday weekend out on Long Island. Family and friends took cover under sunny yellow parasols at the auspicious wedding hour (determined by the priest) of noon to enjoy the ceremony and got the added bonus of a flyby…a surprise from the bride’s father for the couple.

Radhika & Arpit I Indian Wedding I Long Island I Part 1

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013

I had the pleasure of spending the long July 4th weekend photographing a three-day Indian wedding with a bride with the same name as me. I don’t think I’ve ever met Indians who could party and dance quite as much as these two families and their friends. They had the Bollywood dancing down for sure (see the reception post to come). They definitely needed energy and stamina. ‘Rise and Shine’ was the perfect message for a bride who got up at 4am to start her hair and makeup for her 18-hour wedding day and after dancing non-stop with all her wedding guests till midnight.  There were so many great moments that it made sense to show the images from this wedding in several blog posts. Radhika’s family had a special ceremony at their home in Holbrook to greet the bride before her wedding…an emotional time for the close-knit family and a sweet Indian tradition that ritualizes the daughter leaving her family home to start her new life.

Neha & Ranjit – NYC Engagement Portraits Part II

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

I wanted to post a few more photos from Neha and Ranjit’s engagement session from taken on the Highline and in Times Square. I think I only managed to convince them to do an early morning shoot on the Highline because it was close to Ranjit’s apartment, but it was well worth it. By 8:30am when we were finishing up it was already crowded. The thought bubbles made us laugh so we had to use them in a photo. I loved the changes in light that happen in the morning from that soft early light to cloud cover, to strong contrasty light. Then there’s the crazy neon lights of Times Square at the end of the day.

Mona & Jason’s Indian wedding – Old Greenwich, Connecticut

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

When I met Mona and Jason they’d already tied the knot legally and their traditional Indian wedding was a year away. Having grown up with my set of Indian parents it didn’t surprise me at all that it made Mona’s parents happy (or maybe they insisted?) that they took that legal step before they moved in together. I’ve actually known Indian couples that didn’t tell their parents they were living together before they got married! Things are changing, but we Indians can be very traditional and we are big on the BIG Indian wedding. Though they were already married their wedding still had that special feeling that comes with celebrating your marriage with your family and friends watching. They had a fun vibe together that came across beautifully in photos.

Venue: Hyatt Regency, Old Greenwich, Connecticut
