Adi & Rachana I New Jersey Marriage Proposal I Jersey City, NJ

I’m no longer surprised when I get asked to photograph a proposal. It’s fun to be in on the surprise and to witness that special moment. Even better when it comes off as planned. I advised Adi to make sure Rachana wasn’t planning on such a relaxed Saturday evening at Pier C Park in Hoboken that she showed up in shorts and t-shirt, unprepared for a photo shoot. Luckily, Rachana’s friend, in charge of getting her to the Hoboken waterfront, knew what she was doing and Rachana was totally prepared (unknowingly) for the moment. I had a to shoo a few people away from the spot before she arrived, but once people knew what was in the works they didn’t mind. One woman offered to marry Adi herself if Rachana didn’t accept since he was a good looking guy. Rachana- it’s a good thing you snapped him up!

I was impressed with Adi’s color coordination between his tie and the balloons. This man is totally prepared for wedding planning!

Nicole & Brian I Montauk Wedding, East by Northeast

I grew up on LI, but only made it out to Montauk for the first time a few years ago. I love that if you drive that little extra bit past the Hamptons you find this laid back, casual beach town vibe. Even better when you go in the off-season. So a wedding on a beautiful May day just before Memorial Day weekend was ideal. Nicole and Brian picked Montauk for their wedding because they’ve spent every summer there since they’ve been together. They chose a beautiful setting overlooking Montauk’s Fort Pond.

I must admit to thinking it was pretty cool when Nicole told me that Brian’s family owned the Memory Motel in Montauk. Mick Jagger supposedly played there a few times and the Rolling Stones’ Memory Motel from their album Black and Blue takes it’s title from there.

Nicole’s choice of decorations and details were very appealing. I loved the lavender of her bouquet and the boutonnieres and the beautiful brooch from her great grandmother than adorned her bouquet. Nicole wanted their wedding to have a ‘rustic chic’ style and not be overly formal. She thinks of peonies and hydrangeas as feminine blooms. The candy buffet appealed to her sweet tooth and her love for old-fashioned candy stores.

I’ve been really loving the dresses of my brides. Nicole had a beautiful Vera Wang design with ivory cap-sleeves which she felt contributed to the romantic, vintage feel she was going for. Her first job in New York was working for Vera Wang so it was particularly fitting that she wore one of the designers dresses years later.

P.S. Those photos of surprise on Nicole’s face are all about Brian surprising her with a trip to Africa.

Judith & Pradeep – Catholic and Hindu weddings, New Jersey

Combining a full Catholic wedding ceremony with a full Hindu one makes for a jam-packed eventful wedding day for sure especially with four locations. Judith and Pradeep tried to create a fusion of their personalities and their separate family traditions with Judith’s family coming from the Dominican Republic (she made a pretty impressive Indian bride though!) and Pradeep’s family from India. I think they did a fantastic job blending everything together. It’s what I love most about weddings in New York…the whole melting pot of cultures and traditions with an American twist.

I’m not a very gushy person when it comes to dresses, shoes, fashion in general….my sister will attest to that….but I have to say that I was in love with Judith’s beautiful blush pink ‘American’ wedding dress designed by Monique Lhuillier. And the shoes were pretty spectacular too. My decor favorite was the use of cherry blossoms for the centerpieces. I always associate cherry blossoms with the beginning of spring.

This is a longer post than most for good reason. There was just a lot going on.

Meg and Drew, Yale Club, New York

I met Meg and Drew at the Brooklyn Wedding Crashers event early in the year. They seemed to like my low key approach to weddings and when it came time to start planning their wedding Meg contacted me. They made it very clear that they weren’t into posed photos and “forced groupings”. Though my emphasis is always on catching the natural, candid moments I’m very into doing great portraits as well and I think we had some lovely ones with such a beautiful setting at the Yale Club and Grand Central Station. I’ve shared a couple of them here. I think my favorite moment of the day was Drew serenading Meg at the reception…putting all his time with the Yale Whiffenpoofs to good use. My second favorite was Meg’s dance with her father that they took lessons for. I was told to make sure I had great photos of that moment.

Aditi & Mick, Indian wedding, Morristown, NJ

Aditi and Mick’s wedding was July 4th weekend. They had all the traditional elements of an Indian wedding and managed to have the wedding day reflect their personalities as well. I have countless photos of Aditi, in particular, laughing like crazy so I know they enjoyed the day thoroughly. There were plenty of people to share the happiness with too, with 8 bridesmaids and groomsmen and hundreds of guests. It was a long, long day…15 hours in total and lots of fun.

The couples I’ve worked with probably have a good idea that I’m a bit irreverent about things and like to look for the details that show the humorous and unique things about each wedding along with capturing the beauty and emotions of the day. A few of the photos below are perfect examples of that: Both Aditi and Mick had the same tattoo (below). Aditi came up with the ingenious idea of using suspenders to keep up her very heavy beaded skirt in place, which I thought was a brilliant idea. It’s the first time I’ve seen a plastic bag used to help slide bracelets onto a bride’s arm. And for some reason, I really liked the fact that the garlands were carefully laid to rest on the tv in the bridal suite at the end of the ceremony.

I can’t speak highly enough about the staff at the Hyatt Hotel in Morristown or the wonderful iced tea in the lobby which really helped with the heat!

I also had the pleasure of working with Anoli, her husband, and the rest of their crew from Shaadi Story for the first time. They were great about coordinating the video with my photography. I’m looking forward to seeing their video of the wedding.
