Neha and Ranjit – NYC Engagement Portraits Part II

I wanted to post a few more photos from Neha and Ranjit’s engagement session from taken on the Highline and in Times Square. I think I only managed to convince them to do an early morning shoot on the Highline because it was close to Ranjit’s apartment, but it was well worth it. By 8:30am when we were finishing up it was already crowded. The thought bubbles made us laugh so we had to use them in a photo. I loved the changes in light that happen in the morning from that soft early light to cloud cover, to strong contrasty light. Then there’s the crazy neon lights of Times Square at the end of the day.

I decided to post a series a of images from just one part of Neha and Ranjit’s engagement session (more to follow later) because I liked all the different poses and it was the funniest part of the day. We decided to pop into a kids playground near Ranjit’s apartment despite the warning on the outside gate that no adults unaccompanied by children were allowed (yes, you have to think about that phrase for a bit). Sometimes you have to live dangerously. Well, we weren’t accosted by any police, but we did find ourselves dealing with a somewhat belligerent bubble seller Neha bargained with for a bottle of bubbles. Then we needed instructions, then the bottle was defective, so was the second, etc. All the time the woman was muttering that we weren’t doing it right, that she couldn’t keep exchanging the bottles and on and on. You wouldn’t think making bubbles was so hard, but it certainly made us laugh! And sometimes that’s all you need, a little light hearted silly event, to make a couple relax, be themselves, and forget about the woman with the camera.

Central Park Wedding – Daniele and Scott

I met Scott and Daniele just one week before their wedding at the Ladies’ Pavilion in Central Park, funnily enough, standing outside NY Magazine’s Weddings Event. They wandered by and asked what the event was inside. As it turned out they were getting married very soon. So a short conversation on the sidewalk and a somewhat longer one by phone led to me photographing their wedding in a very lovely spot in the park. If they really love their photos maybe I’ll be lucky enough to get an invite to the much bigger wedding they are planning in Brazil. In the meantime, I’m definitely going to take them up on their lunch invitation.

Family Portraits – Brooklyn, New York

I’m so glad that we were able to sneak in this family portrait session with Rebecca, David and little Adelaide before they left Brooklyn for Oslo. They were super nice to invite me to their going away bash at a wonderful little place, Iris Cafe (a new discovery for me), in Brooklyn Heights where I caught up with many of their friends I met at their wedding. I also had the pleasure of tasting David’s homemade wine from the Pacific Northwest. I told them I’d be more than willing to take up their invitation to Oslo especially if they can wangle me some wedding gigs.

Family Portrait Session – Charity Auction for Rocking the Boat

For the second year I’ve been able to offer a portrait session for the benefit auction at the New York Yacht Club. It’s such a great organization. I’m biased, of course, since I’m a sailor and think getting kids to build wooden boats and get the out on the water is such a wonderfully cool idea. There are some incredible things up for auction including a 10 day Galapagos cruise, dinner for two at Fish, a basic sailing course it’s worth taking a look. They also have an online auction if you can’t make it to the event.

Child Portraits – New York City

Here are some photos of beautiful little Isabel. I photographed the wedding of Isabel’s parents, Lauren and Alex, at a vineyard on LI a few years ago. They’re now expecting a little brother or sister for Isabel. It’s a special treat to see the couples I’ve photographed again and watch their families grow. I’m hoping in 2012 that we’ll finish their album, but needless to say Alex and Lauren have been busy building a home and a family so they’ve had a good excuse for delaying the album design process.

Engagement Portraits – New York

Ben and Lee are having their wedding reception at the Brooklyn Museum next summer so we were lucky to have the opportunity to do their engagement portraits there. I also thought it would be cool to show their shared love for movies so we went to one of their favorite theaters, the Film Forum, and added in a stop at their first date place, John’s Pizza on Bleeker. I don’t mind saying that having a few slices of that terrific pizza was a great way to end a day spent getting to know this couple.

Central Park engagement portraits – Judith and Pradeep

We’ve had such incredibly beautiful weather this month with the fall colors hitting their peak and surprisingly balmy temperatures. I’ve loved being able to spend much of the month photographing couples and families outdoors. The light in the fall is so different than the summer. With the shorter days we can have some incredible light midday filtering through the trees. Of course all that color is also fun to play with.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Judith and Pradeep before photographing their wedding next April. I always tell couples that these sessions are not only fun, but a great way for us to get know each other and for them to become comfortable posing for photos. The aim, of course, is for it to not feel like posing. That’s where talking ahead of time about ideas and locations than have an appeal for each couple is really important. Both Judith and Pradeep love spending time in natural settings so Central Park with all it’s variety seemed a great choice. We even ran into Big Bird there.

I couldn’t resist posting this wonderful, fun proposal on the London underground. Apparently the prospective groom, Adam, had to sabotage Lucy’s car when she considered driving to work that morning rather than take the train.

Bernadette and Andrew, Central Park Portraits

I wish I’d been able talk Bernadette and Andrew into letting me photograph their city hall wedding. They put a wonderful spin on the day by enjoying a ferry ride to Staten Island to the city hall there to make things more romantic. Love is just as sweet the second time around….Bernadette said she’d found her soulmate in Andrew.

These are some of the portraits I did of them before their quiet, elegant dinner for friends at Moma. Only MOMA would come up with such a cool MODERN wedding cake…I just had to show it off.
